The National Science
Foundation sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates- China for the
summer of 2012. The REU-China program at Alabama A & M University and
Nanjing Forestry University is an opportunity for undergraduates and
graduates to engage in research in the Department of Natural Resources and
Environmental Sciences. We were mentored by graduate students and faculty
from AAMU and NFU. We worked on research in areas of forestry and plant
sciences, insects and wildlife ecology, molecular biology and genetics, soil
mineralogy and biogeochemistry, hydrology and environmental monitoring,
landscape ecology, and human interactions. We were required to conduct field
sampling/site visits, data analysis, and scientific writing. We attended
seminars and workshops on research and career planning. At the end of the
program, participants prepared a final report, a poster, and presented their
research at a research symposium. We also received a stipend, dining card,
and were housed in dormitories on the historical campus of AAMU.
