Hello
(Ni Hao)! My Name is David Farris.
The
project that I had the pleasure to work on at NFU (Nanjing Forestry University)
examined how bird populations were affected by different types of land use. I
am currently working towards a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
(EEB) at the University of Connecticut. I also currently work as an undergraduate lab
assistant in an Evolutionary Development Lab. I am originally from Mount
Vernon, New York (about 15 minutes away from NYC). I applied to this REU and
was lucky enough to get accepted in the Spring of 2012 and go to China a
second time (my first time was in 2010). I also will get the opportunity to
study in South Africa in August 2012 for three weeks through the Natural
Resources Dept. and Study Abroad Office at UCONN. The REU through Alabama A&M, Nanjing
Forestry University, and the National Science Foundation combines learning
about new science skills and a chance to gain research experience with
learning and living with a new culture, which is something I looked forward
too. If you are interested in this REU (or any other international programs),
remember to leave the stereotypes in the US, have fun, and get ready to learn
about both research and culture.
